What Flame Retardants Do You Use?
Mattress manufacturers are required to meet the Federal Regulation CFR1633 which measures the flammability of a mattress. In order to comply with this regulation our handcrafted mattresses are made with a small amount of Borax, a naturally occurring substance, as a fire retardant. The fire retardant is minimally sprinkled into the cotton during production, and no fire retardants exist in our Certi-Pur foam, natural or organic latex or wool. While we are adding a natural fire retardant to our cotton batting that is undetectable to most people, some people may still prefer to have an untreated mattress. We can accommodate that preference once we have a doctor's prescription on file.

More About Borax
Boron is considered to be an essential micro-nutrient for plants. Fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts are particularly high in boron, in fact, the average person eats between one to three milligrams of Boron each day as part of a healthy diet. Boric acid also occurs naturally in water and soil. Borates have been used for thousands of years in middle-eastern countries, Greece and China as a food preservative, cleaning agent and as an antiseptic. Boric acid in a diluted solution can be used as an eye wash or to treat yeast and fungal infections. It can also be used for minor burns and cuts. It is a safe and non-toxic alternative to chemical flame retardants. Material Data Safety Sheet

Can I Get A Mattress With No Flame Retardant?
A doctor's prescription is required for any mattress that has not been treated with a flame retardant. This procedure is the result of federal law, CFR1633, which was enforced on the 1st of July, 2007. According to CFR1633, all mattress manufacturers are required to use a flame retardant (FR). All mattresses are tested and approved per CFR1633 regulations. This regulation ensures that mattresses provide an adequate amount of escape time for victims trapped in a fire.

This prescription is a one of a kind exemption on a mattress or mattresses for the named individual. In accordance with CFR 1633 the prescription must be requested in conjunction with either illness or injury, and that the addition of Borax would be detrimental for the individual. The Doctor must be a state licensed physician, chiropractor or osteopath. (Includes all 50 states)

If you prefer that your futon mattress not be treated with Borax, you must mail or e-mail us your prescription and the form in the link below before we can release your mattress. The prescription must be for a flame retardant free mattress and must state your full name, doctor's name and signature. A copy of your prescription will be kept on file for a period of no less than three years. Click here for a printable info sheet and Doctor's prescription form.

How Do I Care For My Futon??

It is important to protect your bed from moisture to prevent mold & mildew since our futons are not chemically treated. We carry removable mattress pads made with natural fibers such as cotton or wool that can be removed and washed. Similar to conventional mattresses, futons can not be washed or dry cleaned. Spot clean any spills as quickly as possible with hydrogen peroxide and/or baking soda using an absorbent sponge. The shell of your futon is tufted in order to hold the batting in place and is not meant to be removed or washed. To read more, please click here to download the entire care document.

Do You Recycle or Relayer Futons?
Sorry, we do not recycle or relayer futons at this time. As a growing mattress manufacturer that now sells nationwide it is necessary for us to take preventive steps to ensure that our manufacturing facility is completely free and clean of any possible cross contaminants that may happen when relayering and working with used mattresses.
